Why 7-year car loans are risky
A car loses value every year, while a home usually gains. With a 7-year loan, you could owe more than the car is worth for the first few years. If you need to sell it early, you'd have to pay the difference from your pocket.
At 10% interest, the 7-year option costs ₹3.16 lakh in interest, almost 40% of the car's loan amount.
The effect of a ₹2 lakh down payment
Paying ₹2 lakh upfront and borrowing ₹6 lakh for 5 years at 9%:
- EMI falls from ₹16,607 to ₹12,455.
- Total interest falls from ₹1.96 lakh to ₹1.47 lakh.
That gives you a lower EMI than the 7-year loan, and you're debt-free two years sooner.
A simple rule many people follow
The 20/4/10 rule: pay at least 20% down, borrow for no more than 4 to 5 years, and keep the EMI plus fuel and insurance under about 10% to 15% of your monthly income. If the car you want breaks this rule, consider a cheaper model or a good used car.
