₹20 lakhabout ₹7.1 lakh
₹25 lakhabout ₹8 lakh
₹30 lakhabout ₹8 lakh

Up to ₹12.75 lakh the new regime is always at least as good, since it already brings your tax to zero.

Who should still pick the old regime?

  • People paying a large home loan interest and claiming a big HRA exemption at the same time.
  • Employees in Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Ahmedabad with high rent, now that these cities get the 50% HRA limit.
  • Anyone whose total deductions comfortably exceed the break-even figure above.

Everyone else is likely better off with the new regime and fewer forms to fill.
