How much SIP do you need to make ₹1 crore?
At 12% a year, you need a monthly SIP of about ₹10,000 for 20 years to build ₹1 crore. Start 10 years later and the required SIP jumps to about ₹43,000. Time matters far more than the amount.
Monthly SIP needed for ₹1 crore
| Years | At 10% | At 12% | At 14% |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 years | ₹48,414 | ₹43,041 | ₹38,155 |
| 15 years | ₹23,928 | ₹19,819 | ₹16,317 |
| 20 years | ₹13,060 | ₹10,009 | ₹7,597 |
| 25 years | ₹7,474 | ₹5,270 | ₹3,667 |
| 30 years | ₹4,387 | ₹2,833 | ₹1,800 |
12% is a common long-term assumption for diversified equity funds in India. Returns are never guaranteed, so the 10% column is a sensible cautious plan.
How much of the ₹1 crore is your own money?
At 12% over 20 years, you invest about ₹24 lakh and the market adds the remaining ₹76 lakh. Over 10 years, you'd need to invest ₹51.6 lakh yourself for the same result.
The step-up shortcut
If ₹10,000 a month feels too high today, start smaller and raise the SIP by 10% every year, in line with your salary hikes. At 12%:
- For 20 years, start at about ₹5,000 a month and step up 10% yearly.
- For 15 years, start at about ₹11,500 a month and step up 10% yearly.
Most fund houses and apps let you set this up once as a "top-up SIP".
What ₹1 crore will be worth
Inflation shrinks money over time. At 6% inflation, ₹1 crore in 20 years buys roughly what ₹31 lakh buys today. Set your goal with that in mind, and review it every few years.
