₹1,000, ₹2,000 or ₹3,000 SIP: what it becomes in 10, 15 and 20 years
A ₹1,000 monthly SIP for 20 years can grow to about ₹10 lakh at 12% a year. ₹2,000 a month can reach about ₹20 lakh, and ₹3,000 about ₹30 lakh. You don't need a big salary to start.
Small SIPs at 12% a year
| Monthly SIP | 10 years | 15 years | 20 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 | ₹2,32,339 | ₹5,04,576 | ₹9,99,148 |
| ₹2,000 | ₹4,64,678 | ₹10,09,152 | ₹19,98,296 |
| ₹3,000 | ₹6,97,017 | ₹15,13,728 | ₹29,97,444 |
12% is a common long-term assumption for equity mutual funds. Actual returns can be higher or lower, and some years will be negative.

Your money vs the market's
| Monthly SIP for 20 years | You invest | Estimated value | Growth from the market |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,000 | ₹2,40,000 | ₹9,99,148 | ₹7,59,148 |
| ₹2,000 | ₹4,80,000 | ₹19,98,296 | ₹15,18,296 |
| ₹3,000 | ₹7,20,000 | ₹29,97,444 | ₹22,77,444 |
Over 20 years, about three-quarters of the final amount comes from growth, not from your deposits. That's why starting early matters more than starting big.
How to start a ₹1,000 SIP
- Complete KYC once with your PAN and Aadhaar on any mutual fund app or a fund house website.
- Pick a low-cost index fund or a diversified equity fund. Choose the "Direct" plan, which has lower fees.
- Set the SIP date a few days after your salary arrives.
- Set up autopay through UPI or your bank, so you never miss a month.
Grow it every year
Raise your SIP by ₹500 or 10% every year when you get a raise. Small increases add up to a much bigger amount over 20 years.
